Embracing Mistakes and Finding Redemption: A Journey with KPA
Meeting Felix at APA
My professional life as a study abroad coordinator at the University of Texas at Austin reached a breaking point with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite my love for education and helping students achieve their dreams, the internal struggle led me to quit and, eventually, to the companionship of Felix.
When I met Felix, a Border Collie Labrador mix we adopted from Austin Pets Alive (APA), he stole my heart. However, the challenges he presented exposed our unpreparedness. Desperate for guidance, I embarked on a research journey that led to a mix of traditional and positive-reinforcement methods.
Dog Daycare Dilemma
Fast forward to December 2021, I found myself in Bedminster, NJ, uncertain about my professional future but dreaming of becoming a dog trainer. A stroke of luck landed me an apprenticeship with a local trainer. Despite initial excitement, my conflict with his methods grew as he advocated harsh techniques like shock collars.
The turning point came when he used a shock collar on a young German Shepherd, witnessing a joyous spirit turn into fear and aggression. Deeply disturbed, I delved into alternative methods, discovering the power of positive reinforcement through clickertraining.com.
Struggle and Redemption
My attempt to introduce positive-reinforcement methods to the lead trainer was met with resistance. Eventually, I was asked not to come to work, leaving me crushed and questioning my pursuit of becoming a trainer. I felt bad on multiple levels because I believed I had let myself and Felix down by following bad advice. When I was an apprentice, I had used some of the trainer's corrective training methods, like leash popping, with Felix, subjecting him to harsh training methods in an effort to reduce his reactivity.
Determined not to give up on Felix, I sought guidance from CCPDT-KA trainers practicing humane methods. Their support and advice, coupled with positive reinforcement training certifications, reignited my hope for a fulfilling training career.
Finding Light Through KPA
Motivated by newfound knowledge, I applied to the Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner program. Under the guidance of the incredible Terry Ryan, I learned so much and made plenty of mistakes along the way. Felix's reactivity significantly reduced, marking a triumph in our shared journey. My mental health also saw improvements as I made the courageous decision to explore antidepressant medication, breaking free from the stigma I associated with it. Without KPA's teachings about the acceptance of mistakes, I wouldn't be where I am today. Life is inherently confusing, especially when misinformation is confidently shared. It's unrealistic to expect infallibility. Embrace compassion for yourself; it's okay to make mistakes.
Extending a Paw of Support
My journey with Karen Pryor Academy has been transformative, filled with lessons, mistakes, and triumphs. Through the ups and downs, I've come to realize the importance of compassion, not just for ourselves but for our furry companions as well. As I share my story on positivedoggo.com, my hope is to extend a paw of support to those who may find themselves navigating similar challenges. Whether you're grappling with self-doubt, seeking humane dog training methods, or simply in need of encouragement, I want to be a source of inspiration. Together, let's embrace the imperfect journey of growth, understanding that it's okay to make mistakes and that redemption is always within reach.
